What’s a Spoonie?

The word Spoonie comes from a short essay by Christine Miserandino, called “The Spoon Theory”. Christine used the Spoon Theory is a metaphor for Lyme disease, but it also resonated with people suffering from a huge variety of invisible illnesses, including chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, and, in my case, chronic migraines. As a result, the term Spoonie was adopted by the invisible illness community and became a symbol of their pain and their advocacy efforts.
